As art majors at Boston College, Lauren and Ryan met on the first day of their senior year Final Project class. What initially drew them to each other was their attraction to each other’s…um…artwork, which was inspired by their respective love for the ocean. We’re sure it had nothing to do with her pretty smile or his surfer boy looks. After graduation, they moved to the beach and started Radcakes, a collaboration of custom designed sneakers, screenprints, and jewelry. Their wedding was the perfect opportunity for them to share their artwork and love of all things in the Epipelagic Zone with their friends and family, and really reflected who they were as a couple. They put so much love into every single detail of their wedding, that was all handmade by Lauren and Ryan, from the invites and coasters to the jewelry and sneakers.

Lauren’s background in SCUBA diving exposed her to a world of colors and patterns that inspired her art; and similarly, Ryan’s love for wave riding and respect of the sea was reflected throughout his portfolio. Along with under-the-sea inspired art, the couple share a passion for travel, fossil hunting, and collecting antiques. For their wedding, Lauren and Ryan paid such close attention to detail and incorporated different aspects of their passions into their creations.

The couple worked day and night up until their wedding to finish all of their designs and their incredible labor of love really shone through on their big day. The morning of the wedding, Lauren was still busy putting the final touches on her jewelry designs while getting her hair and makeup done. She designed and created a different piece of jewelry (necklace, earrings, and bracelets) for her mother and each of the bridesmaids, using fossil sharks’ teeth and shells that she collected over her travels. Ryan custom designed and drew on Vans sneakers for his groomsmen; each shoe was different, based on the guys’ individual interests. The groomsmen’s ties were printed with a pattern taken from pages in Lauren’s sketchbooks. Designs from her sketchbook were also used for the beverage napkins and wedding stickers. Lauren also designed the underwater coral reef themed seascape for the wedding invites and sealed them with vintage paper lace, while Ryan designed the ocean scene for programs that also functioned as fans. The couple designed six sea creature patterns (octopus, shrimp, crab, jellyfish, seahorse, and manta ray) and printed them on the towels, coasters, and table numbers. The added bonus? They actually sell these items at their shop, Radcakes, and take custom orders! The only accessory that wasn’t handmade by the couple at the wedding was the beautiful wooden clutch that Lauren carried, but it was equally as sentimental. It was the same clutch Lauren’s mom used on her wedding day. Love that!

For their honeymoon, the couple decided to go skiing in the Alps.

Just kidding. They, fittingly, took two weeks off to go diving in Australia. We wish them a happy lifetime of living on the beach and creating beautiful art together!
